After the Interview
You made it through the interview! You’re almost at the finish line, but before you decide to congratulate yourself, follow these three valuable steps to leave a lasting impression.
Assess Your interview performance
To assess your own performance, write the questions you recall answering and how you answered them. Importantly, also include the things you didn’t say that you wish you had. You may work some things into follow up. The goal is to identify issues and why they occurred. It can help you in future interviews.
Ask for feedback
If an employer informs you that you didn’t get the job, consider asking them for feedback about your interview. They may express your need for more experience, but some employers might tell you what specific skills to improve.
Use this feedback to improve your interviewing skills for the future. Reaching out to employers for informational interviews and doing mock interviews with friends are helpful ways to improve your skills.
Follow up and send thank you note
After your interview, differentiate yourself by showing your appreciation and reiterate to the employer your interest in the position by sending a thank you letter in an email format to those who took the time to interview you. Your thank you letter should be sent within a 24 hour period of when the interview was held.
Wait Before You Follow Up. The rule of thumb regarding job follow–upemails is to wait one to two weeks after the conversation or thank-you note.
